As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Bella Rosa will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for gems to come loose over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than replace a lost one.

1. When in doubt, take it off.

None of our pieces learned to swim or do yoga. The gym, beach or swimming pool isn’t an ideal place for your fine jewelry. Even when preparing a meal or doing household chores, it’s a good idea to store your jewelry in a safe place. Not only will this protect your treasured pieces from harsh chemicals and debris buildup, but it will also help you avoid losing your jewelry. Retrieving your lost treasure is a nightmare you should never have to experience. These precautions even include getting a good night’s sleep: if you take your rings off at night, you’ll double their lifetime!

2. Avoid damaging chemicals

Hairspray, lotion, and perfume can be damaging to certain types of metals and colored gems. Precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum are especially susceptible to discoloration from these everyday care products. When getting ready in the morning or preparing for a night out, set your jewelry aside, or better yet, leave your jewelry in its case until you’re ready to wear it.

3. Store your jewelry in a clean, dry space.

It seems obvious, but we’ve all been guilty of tossing our jewelry in a drawer or on the nightstand. It’s best to keep your jewelry in a fabric-lined case that has compartments and dividers for your jewelry. If you don’t have a jewelry case, store them in their original box, small pouch or zip lock bag.

4. Use mild cleaners for regular cleanings.

Your vintage jewelry from Bella Rosa Galleries is a sentimental reminder of your love. Don't let it become full of gunk. It's easy to forget about cleaning your jewels, but it only takes a few minutes to renew their luster.
One of the best jewelry cleaning methods involves warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft brush like an old toothbrush. First, make sure your sink has a stopper with a tight seal. Fill a small bowl and gently brush the setting and all around the gems, especially the back which accumulates grime. Dip in the bowl and rinse under a gentle stream of hot water. Remember, a tightly sealed sink. Dry with a soft cloth and if available, a shot of canned air (like you use to clean your keyboard) on the back.
Gemstones like pearls, coral, ivory, and amber should not be cleaned ultrasonically. The same applies to gems impacted by heat and temperature changes like tanzanite, moonstone, opal, turquoise, and topaz.
Our collections are as unique as you. If you have any questions or concerns about cleaning, please don’t hesitate to contact us. And you are always welcome to stop by for a complimentary inspection and spa treatment.
